Cardiac arrests are more likely to be fatal if they occur during sex.
Some intercourse leads to seventh heaven; others, in the morgue. Cardiologists meeting in congress in Barcelona warn against the unknown dangers of coitus. The cardiac risks which are sometimes attributed to it are well identified; what is less known, however, is that cardiac arrests occurring in the middle of an embrace are more likely to be fatal. This, for a matter of modesty: lovers, often naked, do not dare to pick up the phone to call for help.
This observation stems from a study French presented at the European Congress of Cardiology. The data of 3,028 people admitted to the emergency room for cardiac arrest were reviewed by the team of Ardalan Sharifzadehgan, cardiologist at the Georges-Pompidou European Hospital.
“Annoying”
Among the group, 246 cardiac arrests occurred during physical activity and 17 during sexual intercourse. All of the patients were men. However, the researchers observed that the death rate was multiplied by four if the cardiac arrest occurred on this occasion. Only one in eight men survived such an accident, compared to one in two under other circumstances.
According to Ardalan Sharifzadehgan, this high mortality is linked to the time it takes for partners to call emergencies. “They are shocked, they don’t know how to react, he explained. They are naked, perhaps do not dare to call the neighbors… It is very, very embarrassing ”.
Heart massage
They are therefore slow to deploy the right reflexes. However, during a cardiac arrest, studies show that every minute lost reduces the chances of survival by 10%. In work, partners who experienced such an event during intercourse took twice as long to be resuscitated.
In addition, their terrorized partners do not tend to attempt resuscitation. On average, the victims thus spent 8.4 minutes without any assistance before the arrival of help, while if the cardiac arrest occurred in other circumstances (gym, field, etc.), four out of five victims received cardiac massage after 3.1 minutes.
