Studies on cannabis are like those on coffee. Taken in isolation, we can make them say anything! Thus, the research work of a team from Harvard University, carried out on more than 660 men for more than fifteen years, suggests that “cannabis smokers produce more sperm”, as some media were able to sum it up boldly.
No, smoking cannabis does not make you more fertile
The study finds that the number of spermatozoa in cannabis smokers monitored by this study is significantly higher than that of the test group made up of “non-smokers”. The problem is that the author of the study explains herself that these results are contrary to the state of knowledge on the subject!
All the scientific studies published to date show and demonstrate that the consumption of cannabis, but also simply smoking, considerably disrupts spermatogenesis. So what is it?
It is the Harvard researcher who offers another explanation in her study. Knowing that the consumption of cannabis is one of the so-called “risky” behaviors, not only because it is illegal, but also because the desired effect, the modification of behavior and of the sensory space is itself at risk , not to mention the long-term health effects, she simply envisions that cannabis smokers have naturally higher than average testosterone levels.
Testosterone = risk taking = cannabis?
This is what the blood tests taken on some of the men followed in this study revealed, if we take the care to read the study in the scientific journal. Human Reproduction. Now, what is the direct consequence of an elevated testosterone level in men? An increased amount of sperm in the semen, an amount above average!
In conclusion, it is obviously impossible, and moreover, the conclusions of the study expressly prohibit it, to assert that the consumption of cannabis could have a positive effect on the production of sperm. On the other hand, that stoners take more risks than non-smokers is evident, and the fact that testosterone may be involved in adopting risky behavior has already been demonstrated over and over again …
