A little joint to feel better when you’re in a negative mood can seem as harmless as it is inconsistent with your health.
However, a study from Rutgers University in New Jersey (United States) states that this consumption would make you feel worse afterwards, and would generate a vicious cycle of negative moods preceding each new cannabis episode.
And this vicious circle would then play on the control of the smoker’s consumption, and the ability to then stop the use of cannabis.
The study was carried out on 40 young participants aged 15 to 24, consuming cannabis at least twice a week recreationally. Using a laptop computer, the young people were asked to report their positive and negative moods, their sociability and their repeated use of marijuana every three hours for two weeks. In total, over 3,600 reports were completed by participants.
The researchers were then able to observe that themood negative youth increased in the 24 hours before cannabis use, unlike positive moods.
They also noted that the availability of cannabis or the presence of friends did not affect the likelihood of use after a period of negative mood.
The researchers therefore suggest that young people should overcome their periods of negative mood in another way, through sports and artistic activities in particular, to reduce their consumption and especially to get out of this vicious cycle of “ depressive ” consumption.
