The finding is alarming. Cancer is still gaining ground in France and affecting more and more young people.
Cancer kills nearly 150,000 deaths per year
Cancer kills nearly 150,000 deaths per year. It reached 355,000 new people last year. Looking at the numbers more closely, we see that it is the young people who suffer the most from this increase. In fact, in 2012, breast cancer increased by around 60% among 30-39 year-olds and 40-49 year-olds, compared to 1980. This is essentially linked to the systematic screening of people over 50 and to the stopping menopausal hormone replacement therapy.
Lung cancer is also increasing in women and catching up with men’s rates. Thyroid cancer has also seen its incidence increase since 1980. In men, testicular cancer is worryingly increasing. Rarer than prostate cancer, its incidence rate is 22 new cases per 100,000 people.
Early detection seems to be the most effective weapon
For less heavy treatments and better chances of recovery, early detection seems to be the most effective weapon. The cancer league reminds us: screening is for everyone, from a certain age. This concerns all women between 50 and 74 years old for breast cancer, all women between 25 and 65 years old for cervical cancers, men and women between 50 and 74 years old for colon cancers and rectum.
