In a school in San Francisco, parents of students have set up a solidarity system to help a teacher with cancer finance her replacement, reveals AFP in a dispatch taken up by the Europe 1 site.
In California, teachers are entitled to ten days of paid sick leave per year. Beyond that, they can take 100 days of additional sick leave, but the cost of their replacement, estimated at 200 dollars, or 180 euros, is subtracted from their salary. This law has been enshrined in the education code in effect in the state of California since 1976.
Very high health care costs in the United States
Recently, a second-grade kindergarten teacher in the San Francisco district fell ill. She suffers from breast cancer, and must subscribe to these 100 additional days of sick leave to be treated. The parents of pupils of the teacher, who has worked in the school for 17 years, have organized a fundraiser to help her.
The cost of his replacement is added to very high treatment costs in the United States. If, in France, health costs in the event of cancer are covered 100% by Social Security, this is not the case across the Atlantic. Moreover, medical expenses are the biggest cause of personal bankruptcy in the United States.
Like many Americans in this situation, a crowdfunding platform has been set up. It raised 14,000 dollars, or approximately 12,000 euros.
