We can almost all dream it by now: corona is spread via droplets when coughing and sneezing. So do we not have to be afraid of contamination through a mosquito bite?
No matter how hard you try, a mosquito bite just happens. But in times of corona you might look a little differently at that itchy red bump. Because what if that mosquito also stung someone with corona?
Coughing and sneezing
First of all, the RIVM: that states that the coronavirus is spread through droplets when coughing and sneezing. The virus can also survive for a short time on surfaces such as a door handle or a desktop. If someone with corona has just sneezed in their hand and then opened the door or touched the desk, someone else can be infected that way. It is not for nothing that the RIVM wants us to wash our hands and sneeze in the elbow!
No proof
The WHO (World Health Organization) says on its website: that to date there is no reason or evidence that mosquitoes can spread the coronavirus. Like the RIVM, the WHO points out how the coronavirus spreads: via the droplets released when coughing or sneezing.
cold-blooded insect
Also the Volkskrant wanted an answer to this question and consulted an entomologist from Wageningen University. He states that no research has yet been done into the role of mosquitoes in the spread of the corona virus. But… it is very unlikely that the mosquito plays a role in it, he immediately adds. The mosquito is a cold-blooded animal while man – as a mammal – is warm-blooded. Some viruses (such as dengue fever or Zika virus) are able to adapt to the cold-bloodedness of the mosquito. That way he can survive in the mosquito. A mammal that is then stung by the mosquito is thus infected with such a virus. As far as is known, the coronavirus is unable to survive in the cold-blooded mosquito.
