Broccoli limits the liver’s overproduction of glucose
According to a study published in the journal Science Translational Medicine, broccoli may become an alternative to certain medications for type 2 diabetes, which is characterized by excessive glucose levels in the blood. Broccoli would indeed contain an antioxidant, sulforaphane, which limits the overproduction of glucose by the liver in people with diabetes or obesity.
According to this work, carried out by a team of researchers from Lund University in Sweden, broccoli would also improve glucose tolerance and regulate fasting blood sugar. This discovery, which will have to be confirmed by new studies, is good news for patients, since according to the results of this study, broccoli would have the same power as metformin, an anti-diabetic with many side effects.
As effective as a drug treatment?
The researchers in fact subjected rats made diabetic to a diet based on broccoli. After 4 weeks, they could see that the rodents’ blood sugar levels had decreased by 23%, compared to 24% with metformin. The effectiveness of sulforaphane, which is also found in Brussels sprouts or in cabbages, therefore appears to be as formidable as a drug treatment.
” Sulforaphane attacks a central mechanism of type 2 diabetes and has no side effects », Congratulated the authors of this work. ” As an everyday food, it is more accessible than drugs “. The advantage of broccoli is that it is indeed very affordable and can be consumed in different ways. : in soup, salad, mash or as an accompaniment to meat or fish.
