Recurrences in people with cancer are common. Women affected by breast cancer are therefore not spared. A study by Canadian researchers could change that.
Reduce the risk of recurrence after breast cancer
A Canadian team from the Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center in Toronto brought together the many studies and recommendations dealing with the risk of recurrence after breast cancer. By this study published in the Canadian medical association journal, they wish to offer a coherent synthesis to the patients who sometimes hear everything and its opposite according to the doctor consulted.
Indeed, the 50,000 women in France affected by this disease each year maintain the hope of living normally after having undergone chemotherapy, radiotherapy and hormonal treatments. But the stress of a recurrence is very present. Aside from age, tumor size and genetic factors, can the risk of relapse actually be lowered? ? Some behaviors are to be favored.
Sport, the best tool against relapse
Sport is indeed the most effective means of combating recidivism. The numbers speak for themselves: physical activity lowers the death rate from breast cancer by 40%. It lowers the recurrence rate in postmenopausal women over 63 with a body mass index over 25. Many women become more sedentary and decrease their activity, due to the fatigue caused by the treatments. However, practicing two and a half hours of sport per week would be ideal.
It is also advisable not to gain too much weight. The other recommendations concern tobacco and alcohol: there is no particular link with the risk of recurrence, but it can only be beneficial to reduce or even stop. Finally, taking vitamins D contribute to bone mineralization rather beneficial, when we know that the treatments weaken and decrease bone density.
