BMW unveils a first illustration of the next X1 in its electric version called iX1, as well as the autonomy of the latter. The SUV, future competitor of the Volvo XC40 on all fronts, is expected for the end of 2022.
It has been many months since BMW announced a 100% electric version of the X1, which will be named iX1 as the manufacturer’s logic dictates. But this future “zero emission” SUV was still slow to show up. BMW has just published a first official illustration of it, confirming in passing that it will be a variant of the next generation X1 (type U11) and not the current one. The all-road will therefore be offered in thermal, rechargeable hybrid and electric, like the Volvo XC40 which evolves in the same segment.
A BMW X1 with a more assertive character
The style of the third BMW X1 of the name promises to be more angular than that of the current model. The design shows a few sharp edges, a front fascia with vertical outer edges with large protruding air intakes at its ends and almost square grille “beans”. Its aesthetics therefore seems to borrow more from the new Series 2 Coupé than from the new compact minivan Series 2 Active Tourer. It is however with the latter that the crossover will share its FAAR modular platform and a good part of its powertrains. The interior layout of the two models will also be similar, starting with the possibility of having a double horizontal slab combining a digital dashboard and an infotainment touch screen.
The autonomy of the BMW iX1 already known
Like the iX3, the iX1 will be distinguished by a few details, such as the blue outline of a presumably full grille and the vents in its front bumper. No technical sheet has yet been revealed, but BMW already announces a WLTP combined cycle range of between 413 and 438 km depending on the configuration, as well as an average electricity consumption ranging from 17.3 to 18.4 kWh/ 100km. The next BMW X1 should be presented next summer with a view to marketing in the fall. The iX1 is officially announced for the end of 2022.
