The BMW X3 modernizes its cabin and reinforces its diesel version 20d of 190 ch of a micro-hybridization on the occasion of its restyling. This is an SUV that knows the premium codes well and knows how to drive far without constraint.

If many models see their range of motors reduced by economic necessity or to face the crisis of the semiconductors, it is not the case of new BMW X3. On the occasion of its restyling, it retains a strong palette of four diesels (150, 190, 286 and 340 hp), two gasoline (184 and 360 hp) and a plug-in hybrid (292 hp). We can even add the iX3 electric version to this catalog, but for this test we have chosen an X3 that can drive far without a fuss.

A word first on the restyling of the vehicle operated at the end of 2021. It does not upset the line of this third generation model launched in 2017 (code G01). The change is however visible at the level of the grille, whose nostrils make the junction between them, like taillights, more in relief and equipped with a new light signature. BMW has also redesigned the shields; that of the front shows a more sober face than before in x-Line and Business Design finishes which goes well with the chic and premium status of this vehicle. Our X3 x-Line test version perfectly reflects this new spirit, and its 20d engine now receives a 48 V light hybridization.
BMW X3 20d price
At €54,950, the BMW X3 20d x-Line is the entry-level version. The standard equipment is correct, but the technology and the nice equipment are optional. The extension quickly reaches €10,000 for a nice configuration with the Cockpit Pro’s two HD screens, metallic paint, a set of rims in at least 19 inches, leather upholstery and the opening glass roof. (see details on page 2). It’s a sum, but the X3 will be more pleasant on a daily basis and easier to resell with this endowment.

This 20d version must pass a double tax toll in 2022 with the ecological penalty (minimum €1,074) and the new weight penalty (1 150 €). Note that if the plug-in hybrid version xDrive 30e escapes the ecological penalty, it receives a €2,650 weight penalty on its versions whose electric range is less than 50 km in the city. This proposal is therefore uninteresting for individuals. Not to mention that it is expensive (€60,800) and that its fuel consumption climbs quickly outside of the electric driving phases.
Driving
The X3 immediately offers what you’re looking for in a good-sized SUV: a commanding driving position. Before looking away, a look at the cockpit surroundings confirms the model’s premium status. The quality materials and polished finish are worthy of the premium status of the BMW SUV. The technological novelty comes from the screens now 12.3 inches when the Cockpit Navigation Pro option is checked (€1,650), but also from the intelligent voice assistant Alexa and the three-zone air conditioning controls from the latest 4 Series. The i-Drive wheel remains in order to double the tactile control of this very complete multimedia set but which sometimes lacks simplicity.

The four-cylinder 20d of 190 hp and 400 Nm of torque is a propellant that suits the X3 well. After the little hum of the diesel on start-up, it then offers appreciable running silence and makes perfect love with the eight-speed automatic transmission to always move in the right gear. The performances are not breathtaking (there is the M40d of 340 hp for that, engine that we tested in the Series 3), but the breath is sufficient.
Whether you are traveling at a good pace on the highway or on a winding road, this X3 20d always has a response and is not too focused on drink. On a mixed course of 800 km, consumption was set at 7.4 l/100 km. A flow much lower than that of a plug-in hybrid SUV on this type of journey and encouraged by the new micro-hybridization of the 20d, which allows engine cuts at stabilized speed in addition to the fast and discreet Stop & Start at start-up.

Well driven by its double wishbone front axle, which prints a trajectory faithful to the stroke of the wheel, the X3 is pleasant to drive. The suspension correctly channels the body movements, also finding this subtle balance between softness for the passengers and dynamism for the driver. On long journeys, this ride comfort is appreciable. Combined with the silence that reigns on board, it guarantees long stages without fatigue… and without stress in terms of autonomy thanks to the large 68 l tank.
On a more winding route, the BMW X3 remains pleasant. But the mass is felt in the tightest sequences, and the German does not equal the Alfa Romeo Stelvio in agility. The winter tires of our test model, the use of which is now compulsory in some places during the winter period, did not help the dynamism because of the flexibility of the sidewalls which is quite clearly perceived. Unsurprisingly, traction is optimal with the xDrive transmission, which modulates the torque wheel by wheel in conjunction with the ESC.

Competetion
The trio GLC, X3 and Q5 is held in a handkerchief in France, and the BMW starts 2022 with the advantage of the restyling which concerned the Mercedes in 2019 and the Audi in 2020. The three models are not made gifts on prices, it’s not a surprise, and the X3 20d is catching up on the 204 hp Q5 2.0 TDI, which had received micro-hybridization during its restyling. The Mercedes GLC is distinguished by a plug-in hybrid diesel engine that the other two do not offer, except with a gasoline engine.
Those who have a weakness for sharpened chassis will rather look at the side of the Alfa Romeo Stelvio, while those who give priority to the budget will eye the DS 7 Crossback. But the French SUV can no longer join the battle on the diesel side since it now caps at 130 hp with the small 1.5 BlueHDI.
