As summer approaches, donors of all blood groups are being sought. In particular those of the O- group, whose reserves are fragile. The EFS is launching a new collection from July 15.
“Thank you for coming in large numbers! This is the message of thanks formulated by the French Blood Establishment (EFS) at the time of the assessment of the 11th World Blood Donor Day (WDDD) which took place on June 14 in the 350 places of collection open for the occasion. In figures, 7,804 blood donations were made that day.
A significant increase in new donors
In addition, this event made it possible to welcome new donors: 5,608 or 27.7% (against 25.7% on average in 2013). Thus, the French Blood Establishment is taking advantage of this increase to remind people that it is important to convince new donors. Because one of the objectives of World Blood Donor Day is to educate and educate as many people as possible.
For this reason, the EFS invites you to remain mobilized during the summer, “a traditionally sensitive period”, he says.
The EFS observes a drop in donations every year during the months of July and August. However, patients need blood products on a daily basis. 10,000 donations are needed every day.
And this year, even if donors of all blood groups are sought, the EFS is particularly looking for those of the O- group, whose reserves are currently fragile.
1 in 10 transfusions are life-threatening
This is damaging data for many patients. Because these essential donations from the French cover many needs. Among them, long-term pathologies cause the greatest share of transfusion needs. Cancers and blood diseases alone account for 46.5% of transfused patients. This explains why one in 10 transfusions takes place in a context of life-threatening emergency, while 52% are scheduled.
And the reasons for transfusion also vary with age. For 15-45 year olds, it is obstetrics in 10% of cases, cancer with solid tumor for 20% of transfused 45-65 year olds and for those over 80 years old, it is surgery orthopedic which provides more than 20% of transfusion needs.
Faced with these figures, the EFS is expecting many of you for a new collection which should start from July 15.
