To have the gums Bleeding is not a sign to be taken lightly, recalls the French Union for Oral Health (UFSBD). Following a investigation Conducted among 32,421 French people, the UFSBD wants to raise awareness about periodontal diseases, diseases of infectious origin that can destroy the supporting tissues of the teeth (gums and bone). Indeed, the survey reveals that the risks of these diseases are still too underestimated by the population.
76% of French people have bleeding gums
Among respondents, bleeding gums are not perceived as a warning signal since 64% declare that their gums are in good health while 76% have gums that bleed regularly when brushing. However, this bleeding can be a sign ofgingivitis, inflammation of the gums. Another symptom: bad breath. 29% say they suffer from bad breath, the second warning sign of periodontal disease, while 52% of them say they have healthy gums.
Only 9% of French people go to the dentist when they have swollen gums, painful and bleeding ; 22% do absolutely nothing, particularly those under 30; the others prefer to self-medicate. They change from toothpaste for a “gum special”, switch to a soft-bristled toothbrush, or use a mouthwash for several days.
Gingivitis and periodontitis
Following these results, the USBD wishes to draw the public’s attention to the two types of periodontal disease that exist: gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis can be cured quickly with a strict hygiene (brushing twice a day) and descaling. Periodontitis occurs when the inflammation spreads to the bone and forms infectious pockets between the gum and the tooth. If left untreated, this disease can lead to tooth loss and is therefore not to be taken lightly.
