The BMJ Case Report reports the curious story of a man who saw a magnificent rainbow appear on his penis.
- Sclerosing granuloma of the penis is a reaction to the injection of foreign bodies, mainly done with the aim of modifying the appearance of the genitals.
In Uruguay, a man presented to a male genital dermatology unit with a large “tumor mass” that had grown around his penis for ten years. The patient suffered from sexual dysfunction but had no other negative symptoms due to this growth.
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans showed that the mass was limited to dermal and hypodermal tissues, and the tumor was diagnosed as sclerosing granuloma of the penis after two skin biopsies.
Sclerosing granuloma of the penis
Well known to doctors, sclerosing granuloma of the penis is a reaction to the injection of foreign bodies, mainly done with the aim of modifying the appearance of the genitals. It often presents as a “gross deformity of the penis”. These injected bodies can be lipids, hydrocarbons, silicone, methacrylates or even collagen.
This case, however, is exceptional, because on the excrescence appeared a magnificent rainbow, “displaying the whole spectrum of light”. Doctors think that this aspect is due to the interaction between the substance injected and the light, without however being certain.
