Chimney fires, wild rivers, torrential rain, wind in the leaves, chirping birds… Ambient sound videos are extremely popular on social networks, sometimes accumulating tens of millions of views on Youtube.
A (growing) success that may have found an explanation. Indeed, according to a recent study published in the scientific journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), “natural sound” videos would be effective in combating stress, anxiety and negative emotions. Essential in this time of health crisis.
A reduction in stress, blood pressure, pain felt…
In detail: researchers from Carleton University (in Canada) reviewed 36 scientific studies on the health impact of “natural” ambient noise. They found that regular listening to “natural” sounds was associated with a reduction in daily stress (measured using blood cortisol levels) by about 28%, and an improvement in overall health ( heart rate, blood pressure, pain felt and cognitive performance) by… 184%!
How to explain these incredible benefits? “From an evolutionary perspective, an acoustic environment that includes lots of natural sounds is a good indicator of a safe environment — allowing for psychic rest.“ suppose the Canadian researchers.
According to scientists, the most effective “natural” noises are birdsong and running water: if you can obviously listen to them on Youtube before falling asleep (provided you are content with sound, without image), it is more recommended to go and immerse yourself in it directly, by regularly going for walks in the countryside. A relaxing idea for the weekend?
