Everyone is using the messaging service and there is now a new form of Whatsapp scams on the platform. Read more about it here.
The messaging service is the number 1 in the world. There are billions of users, which makes it very attractive for scammers to take advantage of this. Now a new form of fraud has been discovered, in which scammers impersonate employees.
New scam on WhatsApp
The fraudsters pretend to be employees of the support service of the service. After this they try to take over your account and/or get your bank details. Of course with bad intentions, leaving you with an empty bank account. To be able to do this, they send you a message with an account similar to that of the WhatsApp helpdesk.
The fake accounts use a logo of the messaging service with the well-known green check mark in the profile picture. There is also an unknown phone number. This already scares many people off and do not fall for it. But the elderly in particular are victims of the fraudsters because they act slyly.
real support
The real support desk of WhatsApp has not been around that long. It has only been possible to make contact since the beginning of this year. This can be done via chat, of course. If you receive such a message from the messaging service, check the image. At the real helpdesk, the profile picture looks different. It has a green checkmark in it, but it’s next to the name “WhatsApp Customer Service.” This is not in the profile picture.
Always remember that the real support department will not contact you automatically. And they certainly don’t ask for sensitive data. It sounds logical, but many people fall for it.
