Excess weight is generally bad for your health, for example increasing the risk of developing endometrial cancer.
- In 2020, nearly one in two French people (47.3%) was overweight and/or obese.
- Massive obesity has practically doubled in a decade, going from 1.1% in 2009 to 2% in 2020, and now concerns more than one million French people.
Being overweight almost doubles the risk of endometrial cancer, according to a new study published in BMC Medicine. This figure is higher than those put forward by previous research on the issue.
Fasting insulin and testosterone
To achieve this, the scientists analyzed the genetic samples of 120,000 women from Australia, Belgium, Germany, Poland, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States, of whom around 13,000 had cancer. of the endometrium. In addition to the data on being overweight, the researchers also found that two hormones – fasting insulin and testosterone – increased the risk of endometrial cancer.
“This study is an exciting first step in how genetic analyzes could be used to uncover exactly how obesity causes cancer, and what can be done about it,” says Emma Hazelwood, director of research. “The links between obesity and endometrial cancer are well known, but this trial is one of the most important to have examined the exact reason for this phenomenon at the molecular level. We look forward to further research into how we can now use this information to help reduce the risk of cancer in people with obesity.” she adds.
female reproductive system
Endometrial cancer is the most common of the female reproductive system and the 4th cause of cancer in women (with 7275 new cases in 2012) after breast, colon and lung cancers.
In France, the incidence rate of endometrial cancer has been stable for 30 years. It is currently 10.8 per 100,000.
