A woman died after being bitten multiple times by bedbugs. This is the first death linked to this pest.
That’s it: bed bugs made their first death. In the United States, a 96-year-old woman lost her life after being repeatedly bitten by these pests. The facts are reported by the daily The York Dispatch. According to the American press, the nonagenarian was staying with a retired home help, who was supposed to take care of her.
However, the victim’s daughter one day went to the apartment and found her mother there, her skin covered with bites and wounds. More than half of the surface of his body was covered with it, we can read. At the hospital, doctors found that she had developed a serious skin infection.
“Negligence”
Last spring, the victim died of sepsis. The investigation identified an invasion of bedbugs in the victim’s home, causing the death. According to a pest worker called in to treat the house, the bedbugs had been present for at least six months. The woman who was to care for the victim was charged with “manslaughter” and “negligence”.
It is the first time that a person has succumbed to these circumstances. However, it is highly probable that the death is related to the infection of the wounds, accelerated by deleterious hygienic conditions. Never, to date anyway, has it been shown that bedbugs can transmit bacteria or viruses.
They arrive in France …
We can also rejoice, because the bedbug that rages in North America is slowly taking its quarters in France. After Nantes, it’s the turn of the city of Stains (Seine Saint-Denis) to pay the price. Nearly 200 homes are believed to be infested.
The death of the American nonagenarian is a reminder of the importance of cleaning your nails properly so as not to infect wounds when scratched, especially at night.
