Rodrigo was born unborn, without eyes and with part of his skull missing, in early October in Portugal. Her malformation was not detected by the obstetrician who followed the mother’s pregnancy, relates a AFP dispatch taken over by L’Express.
The whole gestation was followed in a classic way. It was only during the delivery at the Sao Bernardo hospital in Setubal, not far from Lisbon, that the parents and doctors discovered the baby’s malformation. How could Doctor Arthur Caravalho have missed it, given the three ultrasounds performed?
First alert at 6 months of pregnancy
However, there had been an alert, in the sixth month of pregnancy, which had led to a further ultrasound. We could not see the face of the fetus well. But the obstetrician then explains to the parents that sometimes it is difficult to see the whole face when it is stuck to the mother’s belly.
The doctor was suspended by the College of Physicians for six months. He is suspected of negligence, this is the seventh complaint against him since 2013.
