20-year-old Priscilla has had a real nightmare because of her contraceptive implant. In September, this Hauts-de-France resident went to the Cateau-Cambrésis hospital center (59) to have the hormonal device removed.
Problem: when she wakes up after her general anesthesia, the young woman no longer feels part of her left arm, where the implant was located … Faced with this situation, her doctor offers her an appointment with a neurologist , expected a month (!) later; Priscilla refuses to wait so long and goes to the “Sos mains” emergency room in Saint-Quentin (02).
After two days of examination, new operation: “they opened my arm, removed the contraceptive implant cut in half, and made me an autograft. They repaired the nerve affected at 80% with part of that of the forearm ”she tells our colleagues of The voice of the North.
40% chance of seeing his left hand paralyzed
In vain. Because despite this second operation, Priscilla (who is the mother of a 4-year-old girl) hardly feels her left forearm anymore, and has difficulty opening and closing her hand. Doctors’ predictions are not encouraging: “Doctors told me that I had a 40% chance that she (her left hand NDR) is paralyzed”.
The young woman decided to file a complaint for “unintentional injuries” with the Cateau-Cambrésis hospital.
“This intervention was carried out in accordance with the recommendations in force, nonetheless reply the managers of the establishment. Specific support from other specialists (a neurologist and an orthopedist) was offered and organized by the service before the patient was discharged. Thirty rehabilitation sessions (four per week) have in fact been prescribed to Priscilla.
In France, 4.3% of women use a contraceptive implant – this method of contraception even affects 9.6% of 20-24 year olds, according to the 2016 Health Barometer of Public Health France.
