More than six out of ten French people say they want to be “reasonable” for the end-of-year celebrations. But a good third declare that they will celebrate this Christmas exactly like the previous ones.
- 64% of respondents have already indicated that they will not leave their homes and as many as they will respect the rule of six people maximum around the table.
- 37% of respondents say they will celebrate this Christmas exactly like the previous ones.
- More than three out of four French people (78%) say they are relieved to celebrate Christmas with their family.
The year 2020 has been different from all the others and the holiday season will be no exception. Since Emmanuel Macron’s announcements on Tuesday November 24 on the possibility of being able to celebrate Christmas with the family, the question of the organization of these celebrations in the current health context has arisen. In an Odoxa-Dentsu consulting poll for franceinfo and Le Figaro published Thursday, November 26, six out of 10 French people say that they will celebrate Christmas in a totally different way from other years.
More than one in three French people will celebrate Christmas as if nothing had happened
This survey points to the caution envisaged by the French for this end of the year. While waiting for the government’s recommendations for the holidays, 64% of those questioned have already indicated that they will not move from their homes. The same proportion of respondents said they respect the “rule of six” maximum at the table. Nearly 66% of French people who say they are concerned by the Christmas party plan to meet with fewer people than in previous years and 72% of those polled assure that they will follow the government’s advice.
A significant part, on the other hand, expressed their desire to celebrate Christmas without these precautions. More than one in three French people (37%) say they want to celebrate this Christmas exactly like the previous ones and 36% will leave their homes, sometimes going quite far. As proof, 12% believe that they will go to another region. In total, 37% of respondents indicated that they will meet with more than seven people, including half who will even meet with more than ten people. Nearly one in two French people (45%) do not intend to respect the meter distance between each person, around two in three French people (64%) even declare that they will not wear a mask.
The French relieved to be able to celebrate Christmas with family
The government’s announcements and the easing of the measures planned for the end-of-year celebrations are good news for a large majority of French people. More than three out of four French people (78%) say they are relieved to be able to celebrate Christmas with their family. 83% of people questioned say they will have dinner and/or lunch with the family. Nearly 60% of respondents will even mix generations (children, adults, elderly people).
There is still a feeling of sadness shared by more than one in two French people (56%) at not being able to celebrate this Christmas like in previous years. Nearly half of those questioned also claim to be stressed by the health context. And 30% are worried about the tensions that the organization of this Christmas like no other could generate within their families.
