Following the publication of a report by the Iges Institute (an institute specializing in health issues) in Berlin, on the relevance of orthodontic care, the health insurance federation is considering the reimbursement of this dental care. “We do not know if orthodontic treatments have the expected benefits in the medium or long term”Ann Marini, spokeswoman for the federation of health insurers, told the newspaper Welt am Sonntag.
There is no evidence that rings have any health effects
The report by the Iges Institute, commissioned by the Ministry of Health, points to the total absence of long-term studies that would present data on the impact of orthopedic appliances on tooth loss or oral diseases.
The Department of Health tried to play down the results by stating that if “there is no evidence that orthodontic bands have beneficial effects on health, nor is there any evidence that it does not”.
But Medicare is now seeking arbitration from the federal agency responsible for regulating drugs and health care to decide whether electronics dental must continue to be reimbursed, in whole or in part only.
