Researchers have already shown that this diuretic, which is one of the most commonly used in the world, can increase the risk of lip cancer, which is the same type as squamous skin cancer.
In this new study, doctors have identified a clear link between the use of hydrochlorothiazide and the possibility of developing squamous cell cancer of the skin.
Surprisingly high risk
” We knew that hydrochlorothiazide made the skin more vulnerable to damage from UV rays from the sun ”, recognizes Anton Pottegård, the initiator of the study. ” But what is new and surprising is that long-term use of this drug leads to a significant increase in the risk of skin cancer ”.
There are several types of skin cancer, and squamous cell carcinoma, with which hydrochlorothiazide is now associated, has a very low death rate.
The need to protect yourself against UV rays
However, these lip and skin cancers are usually treated with surgery which may cause some risk of sequelae as well as a small, but real risk of squamous cell cancer of the skin spreading.
The research team has entered into a dialogue with the relevant medical companies as well as the Danish Medicines Agency about their work.
