The National Assembly created, on the night of Wednesday to Thursday, a new offense, punishable by one year’s imprisonment and a fine of 10,000 euros aimed at repressing the incitement to excessive thinness, in particular on the part of pro-anorexia websites. This amendment to the health bill stipulates that “causing a person to seek excessive thinness by encouraging prolonged dietary restrictions having the effect of exposing him to a danger of death or directly compromising his health is punishable by one year’s imprisonment. imprisonment and a fine of 10,000 euros”.
Anorexia is an essentially female pathology that is part of the family of eating disorders (ED). It affects approximately 70,000 adolescent girls and young women each year, and it is the psychiatric disorder that records the highest rate of death by suicide.
According to a study by Inserm, anorexia nervosa most often occurs between the ages of 14 and 17, with a maximum prevalence peak at 16 years of age. It can nevertheless occur earlier, from the age of 8, or later after the age of 18. Contrary to some popular belief, this disorder affects all social categories and not just the wealthiest.
Ultimately, half of people treated for anorexia nervosa in adolescence recover, a third improves, 21% suffer from chronic disorders and 5% die.
