The National Assembly created, on the night of Wednesday to Thursday, a new offense, punishable by one year of imprisonment and a fine of 10,000 euros aimed at suppressing incitement to excessive thinness, in particular by of pro-anorexia websites. This amendment to the health bill stipulates that “causing a person to seek excessive thinness by encouraging prolonged dietary restrictions which have the effect of exposing him to life-threatening or directly compromising his health is punished by one year of imprisonment and a fine of 10,000 euros “.
Anorexia is a predominantly female pathology that is part of the eating behavior disorder (ACT) family. It affects around 70,000 adolescent girls and young women each year, and it is the psychiatric disorder that has the highest rate of suicide deaths.
According to a study by Inserm, anorexia nervosa most often occurs between the ages of 14 and 17, with a peak in maximum prevalence at 16 years. However, it can occur earlier, from 8 years old, or later after 18 years. Contrary to some popular belief, this disorder affects all social categories and not just the wealthiest.
Eventually, half of people treated for anorexia nervosa in adolescence recover, a third is improved, 21% suffer from chronic disorders and 5% die.
