I am a 64 year old woman. For a few years now I have had two lumps between my left thigh and buttocks. The doctor referred me to a surgeon. I haven’t been there yet, because the doctor said that I can suffer from the scar if I have the nodules removed. The nodules (lipomas, the doctor said) do grow; the first is about one centimeter in diameter and the second two centimeters. Can they lead to cancer?

Lipomas are not cancerous, but they do continue to grow. They can grow very large. If you then want to remove them, you will end up with a much bigger scar than if you had done it before. Furthermore, of course you never know for sure whether they are lipomas. So I would just go to the surgeon: he or she can best estimate whether the removal of these nodules will lead to an annoying scar.
