Americans, known to be rather sedentary and dependent on the car, are starting to walk. They are more likely than ten years ago to practice walking regularly. A survey by the American Center for Disease Control and Prevention found that between 2005 and 2015, activityAmerican walkers increased from 57% to 65% among women, and from 54% to 63% among men.
This walk carried out either as a displacement from one place to another or for the exercise concerns more the well-to-do, educated, and urban classes. It is easier for this population to get around on foot in a large city than for the inhabitants of the countryside or the outskirts.
An activity accessible to all
Still, a third of Americans admit walking less than ten minutes a day. A situation that worries researchers. To remedy this, they advise working to make the roads safer, and setting up programs to encourage people to walk. They remind us that it is advisable to make a physical activity at least two hours and thirty minutes a week. Walking is one of the simplest activities, which does not require special equipment or skills, and which anyone can do. In addition, walking reduces the risk of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, stroke or the risk of depression. Regular walking is associated with decreased abdominal fat, better management of weight, blood sugar, cholesterol and blood pressure. Muscles, heart, bones and joints benefit from this physical activity. A little advice to motivate yourself if you want to walk more: plan some time dedicated to this activity in your schedule and write them down in your diary.
