A 44-year-old American truck driver decided to sue the doctor who operated on his penis in 2009. He remained erect for eight months after the operation. For him, the surgery was botched.
Daniel Metzgar found himself for 8 months in constant erection! The story of this 44-year-old American may make you smile, yet there is nothing funny about it. Following an operation for a penile implant, this truck driver saw his life turn into a real nightmare. In April 2013, he filed a complaint against the surgeon who operated on him.
Suffering from erectile dysfunction, Daniel Metzgar decided in 2009, on the advice of his urologist, to undergo a major operation. The principle of the latter is simple, a prosthesis (silicone and inflatable) is implanted in the penis. It allows the person operated on to obtain an erection normally by using a pump inside the scrotum (skin enveloping the testicles) or at the end of the prosthesis. The goal of this operation, to find a satisfactory sexuality.
The story could have been beautiful, but very quickly, the situation deteriorates. The operation goes badly and Daniel’s penis is found in continuous erection for 8 months. His scrotum is also very swollen. His life then becomes hell. As his lawyer recounts in an American newspaper, certain daily tasks like riding a motorbike or even picking up his newspaper had become impossible for the man “stuck in the same position”.
Despite these worrying symptoms, Daniel Metzgar nevertheless waits 4 months to consult his surgeon again. And during the visit, he then told him that he had to be re-operated to remove the prosthesis. However, the patient does not follow up on the interview. It was only 4 months later, after the tube of the penile device had pierced the scrotum that the latter was urgently operated on to remove the prosthesis.
As a result, the trial between the man and his urologist, Dr. Thomas Desperito, is taking place this week in New Castle Superior Court. On the side of the doctor’s defense, we decline all responsibility in this case. According to the lawyer, “it can happen that the installation of a medical device goes wrong without it being the fault of anyone”. Finally, another argument, Dr Desperito insists on the fact that his patient should not have waited so long before coming back to see him. The story ends well. Today, Daniel Metzgar had a new prosthesis fitted which works perfectly.
But, this type of accident has very little chance of happening in France. For Dr Sylvain Mimoun, gynecologist-sexologist, “ it is a very rare operation. In case of erectile dysfunction, it remains the last resort solution. The placement of penile implants concerns less than 800 French men each year. This is very little compared to the number of men suffering from these disorders ”.
