The researchers made the link between dementia and anemia after studying more than 2,500 adults between the ages of 70 and 79.
This study showed that people with anemia – whose levels of red blood cells are lower than normal – were more likely to develop diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease. Anemia can play a role in dementia by reducing the oxygen supply to the brain, which can damage neurons, reduce memory and thinking skills.
The most common cause of anemia, in addition to blood loss, is iron deficiency. Dr. Kristine Yaffe suggests “that a change in diet can help protect against dementia “.
Dr Eric Karran from the Alzheimer’s Research Association of Great Britain said: “This large study adds to previous observations that a link between anemia and a higher risk of dementia exists, but it is difficult to say with certainty that anemia is a causative factor in the disease..”
Further research is needed to establish this link more precisely. But the best way to reduce your risk of dementia is to lead a healthy lifestyle. Choose one mediterranean diet rich in fruits and vegetables, fatty fish and even the occasional glass of red wine, remember to exercise regularly and not to smoke.
