The Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive brain disease best known for causing progressive memory loss. But it also has other debilitating effects on the body and can affect patients’ ability to move, eat, swallow…
• As their ability to swallow is impaired, they may inhale food, which then causes a pneumonia. Pneumonia is also listed as the cause of death in nearly 2/3 of the deaths of patients suffering from dementia, according to the alzheimers society, from Great Britain.
• Patients with Alzheimer’s may also become restless, increasing their risk of forming blood clots in the brain.
• Weight loss and other complications of Alzheimer’s disease can also lead to a weakening of the immune system, which makes sufferers more susceptible to life-threatening infections.
According to the latest figures from the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of deaths from Alzheimer’s disease would have increased by 55% over the past fifteen years.
