For the moment no remedy has been found to treat the Alzheimer’s disease. The drugs delivered only slow down the degeneration.
Boost the immune system
This pathology is characterized by an aggregation of tau proteins in nerve cells and by deposits of amyloid plaques in certain areas of the brain leading to degeneration of neurons.
According to a new study published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s disease, omega 3 and vitamin D supplementation would stimulate the immune system so that it destroys these famous plaques. Researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles, studied blood samples from two Alzheimer’s patients. They isolated macrophages, cells of the immune system that “eat” the debris of cells, foreign particles and other bacteria to protect the body. Scientists cultured these macrophages with omega 3s and vitamin D. And they found that it increased their ability to destroy beta-amyloid proteins.
The right mix to evaluate
A clinical trial will be conducted to confirm these initial results and determine the dosage required by Omega 3 and vitamin D. Indeed, a previous study pointed out that a large consumption of omega 3 could be harmful.
Remember that apart from any supplementation, the main source of vitamin D for the body is the sun. The skin in contact with its rays produces vitamin D. It can also be found in oily fish, egg yolks, organ meats, etc. Omega-3s are present in quantity in Pisces fatty (mackerel, tuna, salmon, etc.) and linseed or hemp oils in particular.
