If gluten has received a lot of media attention in recent years, it is because of the famous “gluten-free diets” which have made the headlines of many media. But gluten is above all an allergen present in a lot of products, starting with wheat (therefore flour). For people with allergies, ingesting it can lead to intestinal damage. Technology is finally coming to their aid.
Identify gluten in dishes
People with gluten allergies usually face a dilemma : How can you be sure that the food you are going to eat does not contain gluten? When the food is prepared by them, no worries: as they only buy gluten-free foods, identifiable on the box with a specific logo, there is no risk. But things get complicated when they have to eat out.
Of course, it is always possible to ask the restaurant to be careful … But the certainty that there is no gluten in the dish is difficult to have. In this case, the only solution seems to be to give up eating out … Or to go to well-known restaurants. In short, it is not easy every day.
Nima: a small device to detect the presence of gluten
The start-up 6SensorLabs wanted to answer this problem which concerns, after all, many people: in the United States, an estimated 1% of the population is allergic to gluten or affected by celiac disease. This is how Nima was born, a device capable of testing food with an accuracy, according to the start-up, of 99.5%.
To do this, all you have to do is insert a piece of the food into the appliance and it will check for the presence of gluten. The result is available in less than 3 minutes. The test is not foolproof, of course, but it should help people feel reassured when they are not in the familiar surroundings of their home.
Nima will be available for purchase for $ 199 during the second half of 2016, on the Internet.
