The Ministry of Health announced it last January, and it’s now official. All acts related to a voluntary termination of pregnancy (Abortion) will now be fully refunded. A decree published in Official newspaper March 8, 2016 specifies that this coverage concerns all costs relating to abortions, namely medical consultations, investigative ultrasound, the purchase of pharmaceutical products, hospitalization, anesthesia but also control visits. This measure will be effective from April 1, 2016.
Reimbursements will cover the costs of each act within the limits of the rates set by the decree. This limit is 463.25 euros for an instrumental abortion without general anesthesia for a hospital stay of less than 24 hours, 282.91 euros for a medical abortion and 35.65 euros for the consultation prior to the operation with investigative ultrasound. . Currently, and since 2013, only the act of abortion itself is fully reimbursed.
Improve access to abortion
This measure is part of the ministry’s overall desire to facilitate access to abortion for all women, and to make abortion a real right. So the Health law supported by Minister Marisol Touraine and adopted in December 2015 provides for remove the cooling-off period of seven days deemed guilty and stigmatizing, but also to authorize midwives to prescribe medical abortions. Likewise, instrumental abortions can be performed outside hospitals, in health centers.
Each year in France, nearly 220,000 women have an abortion.
