The French consume less alcohol every day and in general. On the other hand, the quality of the products consumed is improving, notes the association Entreprise & Prévention.
France, homeland of wine and alcohol: an increasingly false claim. The daily consumption of alcoholic beverages has fallen further according to the latest barometer from the Entreprise & Prévention association. This organization, which brings together 23 companies in the wine and spirits sector, estimates that the French spend “less to consume better. “
The drop in daily consumption is undeniable: one in ten respondents say they take a dose of alcohol every day. In 2012, they were 14% and the decline has been continuous since 2010. These consumers are mainly elderly (21% of 60-70 years), and males (18%). These statements confirm the emerging trend: young people have more festive consumption of alcohol. “This calls for targeted prevention on abuse and risky behavior,” says Alexis Capitant.
“Spend less to consume better”
We can also observe a change in consumption habits: 44% of respondents admit to consuming alcohol outside their home (cafes, bars, restaurants, nightclubs). A slightly declining proportion which does not prevent France from appearing in the top 3 consumer countries, behind Spain and Germany.
“The French have become occasional consumers” who favor quality over quantity, analyzes Alexis Capitant, Managing Director of Enterprise & Prevention. The majority of French people consume alcohol every week (32%) or every month (25%). If the quantities are decreasing (-1.4 liter per year since 2008), we can observe an “upmarket” of the products purchased: the annual basket now stands at 24.5 euros.
