March 25, 2010 – By April 30, Quebecers are invited to take up the Climate Challenge and reduce their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to reduce air pollution.
Orchestrated by the 16 regional environmental councils of Quebec, the Défi Climat already reaches 600,000 people through the 500 participating companies and institutions.
But on the occasion of the 3e In this campaign, the objective is to reach at least 50,000 people who will collectively commit to reducing their GHG emissions by 70,000 tonnes.
Such a decrease would be equivalent to removing 20,000 cars from the road for 1 year.
23 concrete actions
The organizers of the Défi Climat offer 23 concrete actions – with their equivalent in kilograms of annual GHG reduction – to participating organizations.
Examples?
- Reduce your meat consumption.
- Use public or active transport to get to work.
- Organize teleconferences rather than holding meetings that require travel.
- Replace the oil heating system with a high performance system.
“Addressing all of Quebec this year, the Défi Climat encourages players to make real commitments that will have concrete benefits in terms of reducing GHG emissions,” says Steven Guilbault, general coordinator of Équiterre and campaign spokesperson.
To take part in the Défi Climat, workers, teachers, students, families and citizens can register online at www.deficlimat.qc.ca.
