The World Health Organization (WHO) has published its new health recommendations on the AIDS. It is clear that the epidemic continues to explode, Gottfried Hirnschall, director of the HIV department at the Organization told reporters that “men who have sex with men are strongly recommended to consider taking antiretrovirals. as an additional method of prevention in the face of HIV ”.
Homosexuals are still a population at risk
Homosexuals are still more affected by HIV than heterosexuals. Relaxation of prevention and concerns, they are 19 times more contaminated than the rest of the population.
“We are seeing an explosion in the epidemic for this risk group,” explained Gottfried Hirnschall.
Last May, the American health authorities encouraged populations at risk to protect themselves from the infection of AIDSby taking antivirals. Their attention, limit the contamination unchanged for 20 years. WHO calls on all countries to follow the US decision.
Additional prevention for populations at risk
“Taking a daily pill combining two antiretrovirals, in addition to the use of condoms, could reduce the risks by 20 to 25%, or prevent a million new infections in this group in 10 years”, according to the WHO.
According to a UNAIDS report, the number of people with access to antiretroviral treatment increased by 63% between 2010 and 2012 and AIDS-related deaths decreased by more than 25% worldwide between 2005 and 2011.
These recommendations particularly target populations at risk, such as transsexuals, prisoners, drug addicts and prostitutes, who represent around half of new annual infections.
If in France 13 million people are treated with antivirals, each year, more than 6,000 new HIV infections are discovered. People are mainly infected through sexual intercourse. The National Institute for Public Health Surveillance (INVS) estimates that 30,000 to 40,000 people with HIV ignore it. 35.5 million live with AIDS around the world.
