A 32-year-old man went to the emergency room in Agen for a sore throat. He died a few days later. An investigation is underway.
A 32-year-old soldier was admitted to the emergency room of the Saint-Hilaire d’Agen clinic for angina on August 25, the daily reports South West. The man died a few days later, in still unclear circumstances, which are under investigation.
The Toulouse regional judicial police service is responsible for determining whether a medical error has been made, causing the patient’s death. According to the first elements, he was in good health and was preparing to leave for a mission in Lebanon.
Cardiac arrest
He had gone to the emergency room for a sore throat which made him suffer, following the recommendations of his general practitioner whom he had consulted a few days earlier.
The soldier was admitted to the emergency room on Thursday evening, where he took opioid pain medication. He returned to the clinic the next day to see an ENT doctor and have a CT scan. According to South West, he would have waited all morning in a cubicle to see another doctor.
The young man complained of suffocation; the medical team installed a morphine pump for him. His condition then worsened, he was placed on oxygen. In the early afternoon, he went into cardiac arrest. The resuscitation teams failed to bring him out of his state of unconsciousness.
He was transferred to Saint-Esprit Hospital, in critical condition, where he died on Monday. An autopsy was performed. The soldier’s family filed a complaint.
