The triceps, muscles located at the back of the arm, protect the pancreas against diabetes. This is what a study published on July 3 in the journal Nature and carried out by the European Center for the Study of Diabetes in Strasbourg, in collaboration with the Danish Center of Inflammation and Metabolism and the Geneva University Medical Center.
During physical exertion, the muscles send information to the pancreas. We talk about cross communication between the skeletal muscle and this complex organ. Thanks to this new study, we learn that each skeletal muscle has its own genetic signature and produces different hormones. For the triceps, these are myokines. These have a direct and beneficial effect on the pancreas.
Promote resistance sports
However, as we know, the pancreas is the defective organ in diabetics. Insufficient or improper use of insulin, a hormone produced by its beta cells, is the cause of the disease. Doctors are already recommending the practice of a sporting activity to prevent the risk of diabetes, this study provides more information on the type of exercises to be practiced.
The triceps is a resistance muscle, which mainly consumes glucose. To avoid diabetes, it is therefore better to focus on resistance sports, that is to say high intensity and shorter duration (compared to endurance sports). Dumbbells, push-ups, dips … there are many exercises that allow you to exercise the triceps.
