The coronavirus epidemic, which began in Asia at the end of 2019, continues to wreak havoc in all countries of the world. However, according to Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO), “10 countries currently account for 70% of Covid-19 cases and deaths – and 3 countries even account for half of it“. Latin America (Brazil, Mexico, Peru) is particularly affected by the virus.
“Not all countries reacted in the same way [face à cette épidémie], and not all countries were affected in the same way“, explained Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus in a speech delivered this Monday, October 5, 2020.
Covid-19, responsible for around 1 million deaths worldwide
“There are schematically 4 scenarios: countries that acted quickly and effectively, and therefore avoided the epidemic outbreak; countries that have experienced an epidemic outbreak but have been able to control it and avoid spread of the virus ; countries that have quickly eased their restrictions, especially in favor of the economy, and which are currently experiencing a significant increase in the number of cases; and countries that are still in an intense phase of transmission of the virus.“
At the beginning of October 2020, more than 35 million cases of Covid-19 had been recorded in the world, and the disease was then responsible for approximately 1 million deaths. In France, to date, around 675,700 cases of Covid-19 have been recorded, and the disease has caused nearly 32,400 deaths.
But the health authorities want to be optimistic: “10 months ago, this virus was still unknown, adds the specialist. Today, we have published more than 400 official documents for schools, companies, health professionals, health establishments, the general public… (…) We know that with a clear and understandable strategy, good public information and good cooperation between the population and the leaders, it is never too late: even the worst situations can be improved.“
