On the eve of the anniversary date of the promulgation of the law legalizing the abortion in France, the Minister of Social Affairs, Health and Women’s Rights Marisol Touraine unveiled the main lines of her action program to improve access to abortion.
This program “aims to improve women’s information on their rights, simplify and improve the pathway for women who wish to have an abortion and guarantee a diversified supply throughout the country” declared the Minister after a visit to the family planning center of the Center hospitalier de Saint-Denis in the Paris region.
220,000 abortions per year
Nearly 220,000 women abort each year in France. Most have access to abortion without difficulty, but some are poorly oriented or poorly supported. This action program intends to resolve these difficulties. 8 strong measures have been taken, including:
– A national telephone number on sexuality, contraception and abortion.
– An improvement in the management of abortion with, in particular, the full reimbursement of the biology examinations necessary for the smooth running of the operation.
– The establishment of a procedure for the management of abortions between 10 and 12 weeks of pregnancy, which can be carried out urgently and as a priority.
– The possibility for doctors working in health centers to perform instrumental abortions in order to strengthen the local offer.
– The possibility for midwives to perform medical abortions.
