“Absolutely shameful”. Beth Grant, a Briton who suffers fromanorexia for 13 years, does not hide her disgust at the sight of the sweatshirt which she considers “pro anorexia”. At a time when clothes with inscriptions are popular, certain formulas, exhibited like mantras, go badly. Example with this sweatshirt sold on the online sales site Amazon whose inscription “anorexia like Bulimia, except with self control” (anorexia is like bulimia, but with self-control). While some will take this formula as unimportant derision, patients affected by anorexia like Beth are laughing out loud. According to her, this can endorse this eating disorder that is anorexia, she explains at the BBC who reports the controversy. “It could be extremely damaging for anyone suffering from bulimia or anorexia,” Beth annoys on the BBC’s Victoria Derbyshire show. It could damage their mental health even further and even put them at risk.”
A dangerous inscription
Critics are calling for this garment to be removed from the Amazon site. Dr. Susie Orbach, psychotherapist and expert in anorexia, agrees with this opinion and considers the sale of such clothing “irresponsible” on the part of Amazon. “People affected by anorexia may feel even more distressed” with this kind of inscription. On the side of the company, we did not comment on this controversy, according to the BBC. However, a spokesperson clarified that the sweatshirt was no longer available on Amazon UK.
