New avenues for the treatment of baldness have been highlighted by American researchers. A hope for the 10,000 French people who are affected by it.
Notice to people who are desperate to lose their hair and see baldness forming on the top of their head. A new study should give them some hope.
Researchers from the prestigious columbia university, in the United States, have been working since 2014 to understand the determinants of alopecia, the acceleration of hair loss. Currently, treatments help preserve hair growth, but do not promote regrowth.
They had already shown that two drugs approved by the Food and Drug Administration and used for rheumatoid polyathritis (tofacitinib) or myeloproliferative syndrome (le ruxolitinib) could cause hair regrowth when taken orally. These results had been tested successfully in mice, but also in humans.
Local treatment
In their latest study, the scientists looked at the effects of these two drugs, when applied topically, but this time on the skin of subjects. They used mice, half of their body they shaved. They then treated half of the animals, applying the molecule contained in the drugs to the exposed skin.
After five days, the small rodents saw their hairs grow back. According to the scientists, the origin of this phenomenon is located at the level of molecules present in the two drugs They would activate the development of the hair follicles and would therefore be at the origin of the growth of hairs.
The impressive results observed by the researchers could form the basis of the search for new treatments. However, it will be necessary to wait for clinical trials before knowing if the treatments applied locally also work on men, if they are effective in cases of baldness, and if they do not cause too important side effects.
The 10 million French people, who are affected by baldness, could then benefit from future scientific advances.
