For the first time, researchers have established a molecular link between blood sugar levels and Alzheimer’s disease. According to Dr Rob Williams, from the University of Bath (Great Britain), an abnormally high level of sugar (also called hyperglycemia), known to be a feature diabetesnot only damages cell proteins but also slows the production of an enzyme that prevents brain inflammation.
“Normally this enzyme responds when there is an abnormal buildup of protein in the brain, which is an early sign of Alzheimer’s disease. sugar damage reduce certain functions of this enzyme. This could be the tipping point that allows Alzheimer’s disease to develop.” explains the doctor.
Another reason to cut back on sugar
Dr Omar Kassaar, from the University of Bath, adds: “Excess sugar is well known to be bad when it comes to diabetes and obesity, but this potential link to Alzheimer’s disease is one more reason we should control. our sugar intake in our food.”
