One organ is in the spotlight today, it’s the kidney … an organ that is not always in good shape …
3 million people in France suffer from kidney disease, or nearly one in 20. Worldwide, it is much more: one in 10 people is affected. Be careful not to affect the back, but the kidneys, these 2 organs certainly located in the lower back, whose main function is to filter the blood and rid it of its toxins. And March 8 is World Kidney Day, but it is also that of women and between 2 ailments … I chose the kidney!
Because although many people are affected by kidney disease, little is known about these conditions. However, detecting them early would make it possible to treat them well before the kidney no longer functions at a time when dialysis and transplantation are the only solutions.
What are these most common kidney diseases?
Some are very “meaningful” such as the renal colic attack, very painful, due to a calculus in the urinary tract. Others are much less and evolve without us realizing it. In particular in diabetics or hypertensives, 2 more and more frequent conditions. Too much sugar in the blood or too high blood pressure damages the very small arteries of the kidneys and this in a very insidious way: there are no symptoms! And it can go on for years. And then one day the signs appear: fatigue, anemia, nausea … that’s when the kidney doesn’t work at all!
But if there are no symptoms, how then to realize it?
By biological examinations, with the search for the famous “albumin” in the urine as well as other substances in the blood. These examinations are to be done regularly, in particular in diabetics and hypertensives. In addition, having good control of your diabetes and blood pressure protects the kidney. These checks are also to be requested at least once after 50 years, or if you are taking drugs known to present a risk for the kidney, or if there is renal insufficiency in the family. On this World Day, a website is created www.nephronaute.org specially designed for patients with kidney failure. A wealth of information and good advice.
