It all started on Sunday March 31, 2019: shortly after dinner, four women aged 72 to 95 and a man aged 93, residents of the “La Chêneraie” nursing home in Lherm (Haute-Garonne), were taken to diarrhea, vomiting and feeling sick before dying.
“The first conclusions of the investigations and the results of the biological analyzes carried out on the meals served in the establishment during the weekend of March 30 and 31, 2019” seem to confirm “the hypothesis of food poisoning with origin of 5 deaths ”, specified the public prosecutor, Dominique Alzéari, in a press release. The autopsies thus confirmed that 2 deaths were due “to respiratory arrest after a toxic shock”.
5 deaths and 26 victims in total due to food poisoning
In total, of the 82 residents housed in the private nursing home (which belongs to the Korian group), 26 suffered from this food poisoning. In this medical establishment opened in 2006, “meals are prepared on site from ingredients delivered by Sodexo” (a French company specializing in business services, and in particular in collective catering) added the prosecutor.
Following this case, seventeen complaints were lodged by “the members of eight families of the victims”. And they did not remain without follow-up: this Wednesday, April 17, 2019, “the Toulouse public prosecutor’s office requested the opening of a judicial investigation against persons not named in the state of the counts of aggravated manslaughter, aggravated unintentional injuries , endangering others, and placing on the market food harmful to human health, ”the prosecution said on Friday.
