Several studies have already analyzed the consequences of cannabis use on oral health. Today, it is the dentists of the Belgian Dental Society who are sounding the alarm. In fact, the longer a person uses cannabis, the more likely they are to see their teeth turn yellow, erode, fall out, develop cavities, sensory disturbances, yeast infection or even precancerous lesions.
These conditions affect more cannabis smokers than tobacco, because the molecule responsible for this damage is THC, the active ingredient contained in the leaves. According to dentists, it modifies the oral bacterial flora, decreases the saliva production and make dental plaque thicker and stickier, and therefore more difficult to remove. These changes can also lead to the development of diseases on the tissues that support the teeth and cause them to dislodge. In addition, cannabis use is also associated with snacking, alcohol, poor hygiene and an unbalanced diet. All of these factors are also involved in the deterioration of dental health.
“Create a relationship of trust”
“Any smoker of cannabis (and of course tobacco) should regularly consult his dentist, who could inform him without judging, detect oral diseases, treat them or, if necessary, refer the patient to another specialist”, explains Véronique Seha, general dentist and lecturer on the impact of smoking on oral health at the Respiratory Affections Fund (Fares), at The evening. “It is important to create a relationship of trust in order to tackle this delicate subject and thus allow the consumer to discuss calmly with the practitioner”.
