The reform of the vaccination schedule is “the” health issue that made noise in 2017. In early 2018, 8 vaccines that were previously recommended (against whooping cough, measles, mumps, rubella, hepatitis B , the bacterium Haemophilus influenzae, pneumococcus and meningococcus C) have in fact become obligatory for children born after January 1.
The goal? To ensure that “the 15% of (unvaccinated) children who endanger others and who favor the re-emergence of epidemics for which there are deaths today, get in order to protect the rest of the world. population ”, explained the Minister of Health Agnès Buzyn in July 2017.
And after the results of the annual Vaccinoscopy survey on pediatric vaccine coverage and mothers’ perception of vaccination (published on November 5, 2018 in the specialized journal Medicine and Infectious Diseases), it was effective.
Immunization coverage is on the rise in children
Conducted in France with 1000 mothers of children aged 0 to 11 months, and born after January 1, 2018, this vast survey first shows a clear increase in vaccination coverage at the age of 6 months: + 8 points for hepatitis B and + 31 points for meningococcus C.
In addition, the perception of vaccines by mothers in France seems to have improved: while in 2017, they were 64.7% to declare to be “in favor of vaccination against serious diseases”, this figure rose to 68 , 4% in 2018. In 2017, 32.7% of mothers were “in favor of a decrease in the number of vaccines” against 28.8% in 2018.
Positive results that must however be put into perspective: indeed, according to an international survey conducted in 2015 in 67 countries and among 65,819 people, 41% of French people are today vaccinated skeptics … against an international average of Only 15%. Still some progress to be made!
