Since mid-March 2020 and the closure of schools due to the coronavirus epidemic, the children have been at home. And parents who work from home have the joy (?) Of being with young and old all day long …
The Association for the Improvement of Sight (Asnav) suggests that parents take advantage of this special period to check and assess the visual abilities of their children. Some signs to look out for:
- If the child has difficulty concentrating, if he gets tired quickly, if he is agitated at the end of the day, he may be hypertropic. This visual disturbance is characterized by an eye “too small”: even if it sees well (near and far), the eye must make a permanent effort to see and it get tired quickly. Hyperopia mainly concerns young children.
- If the child needs to get closer to his books and notebooks to read, if he squinted his eyes to look into the distance, if he made careless mistakes when copying sentences, he might be myopic. This visual disturbance is characterized by good near vision but difficult distance vision. Myopia appears more in elementary school.
- If the child draws askew, if he does not write on the lines, if he confuses letters (the B and the P, the O and the C, the H and the N … for example ), it may be astigmatic. Astigmatism is characterized by blurred vision (near and far.)
In the baby too. Even before school age, it is possible to spot a visual disturbance in a young child: if the child turns his head (or closes an eye) to look at an object, a person or in the distance ; if it is often awkward; if it falls or bumps frequently, especially on the same side … these are warning signs!
AT?? know. Take a photo of your child from the front, with the flash. Then check if the flash reflections in the child’s pupils are symmetrical: if not, there may be a question of strabismus … and this requires an appointment with the ophthalmologist!
My child (maybe) has a vision problem: what to do? The good idea: make an appointment with the ophthalmologist now to do an ophthalmological assessment … as soon as the confinement is over!
