Most of you will have grown up with singles and LPs as the usual sound carriers. A generation before that was accustomed to the 78 rpm record, and that was the medium with by far the longest track record (at least half a century). Unfortunately, those 78rpm records were very fragile and so many ended up like shards in a garbage can. In order not to lose all the beauty that has been recorded over many decades, The Internet Archive has the great The Great 78 Project set up in which people digitize old records and make them available in this way. Years of listening pleasure guaranteed!
