High heat, air pollution, proliferation of pollens, lack of sleep, fatigue, stress … here are all the “ideal” conditions to trigger or worsen eczema outbreaks and itching attacks, even more intense in end of the day. THE’French Eczema Association therefore reminds us of the right actions to limit crises during this summer period.
Tip # 1: limit sweating
“Sweating accentuates the dryness of the skin and allows allergens to penetrate the skin barrier, and thus cause inflammation, even infection (dry or oozing red patches with vesicles, edema accompanied by pain and burning sensations) “emphasizes the association. It therefore recommends:
- Take short, cool showers to remove perspiration and dry yourself by gently patting the skin.
- Moisturize the skin regularly with moisturizers and refresh with sprays of thermal water, previously refrigerated.
- Do not abuse the air conditioning which dries the skin (find advice here for cooling off without air conditioning)
- Put your nightwear in the refrigerator during the day, to calm the itching attacks that worsen in the evening.
Tip # 2: avoid exposure to pollen
To do this, rinse your hair at night before going to bed so as not to spread pollens on the pillowcase. Avoid driving with the windows open (a bit difficult to do when you do not have air conditioning in the passenger compartment) and, of course, drying your laundry outside. Because even if the weather is ideal for drying sheets in direct sunlight, wet laundry easily picks up pollens in the air.
For children and infants with eczema (the disease affects 15% of babies under one year old, and 20% of children under 7 years old), it is advisable to be very vigilant because the skin of the little ones is all the more weakened during a heat wave. To avoid irritation:
- Moisturize their skin very regularly.
- Refresh them with thermal water misters.
- Dress them in cotton clothes that are light and loose.
2 grandma’s itchy remedies
- Dip a washcloth in ice milk and apply to the irritated area.
- Grate a carrot and apply the fresh pulp as a poultice.
