Recently I was irradiated in my chest area on the right, my lymphs were also irradiated. Can I still have a breast reduction?

Werner Beekman, plastic surgeon:
A breast reduction can certainly take place after radiation, if there is sufficient time between the radiation and the operation.
The procedure cannot be performed immediately after radiation. One or more irradiations reduce the microscopic blood flow to the skin and underlying tissue. This blood flow is necessary for the healing process after surgery. The skin and underlying tissue can also feel stiffer after radiation and therefore be less pliable. With a breast reduction, it is important that the tissue is flexible and therefore easy to handle. This way a new breast shape can be created.
After the irradiation, it takes a while until an initially stiff skin feels somewhat supple again. This can sometimes take a year. In addition, the fluid can be retained for a long time in the operating area and the arm on that side, because the lymphatics work less well and do not drain fluid. Swelling of an operating area will also delay healing. In order to give a good answer to your question, I think it is best that you make an appointment at my outpatient clinic in the Tergooiziekenhuizen, Hilversum location.
